BRIDGING COMPATIBILITY,
CONTROL, AND PERFORMANCE
Subsea and deepwater cementing operations require reliable equipment that can perform across demanding well configurations while reducing operational complexity and personnel exposure. Gulfstream Services, Inc. presents field-based results from the deployment of its multi-function Wireless Rotating Cement Head (RCH) across subsea and deepwater wells offshore Indonesia.
The technical paper, A Multi-Function Wireless Rotating Cement Head for Subsea Wells: Bridging Compatibility, Control, and Performance, examines the system’s compatibility across multiple liner-hanger configurations, wireless remote actuation, rig-time efficiency, and long-term operating performance.
FIELD APPLICATION
The wireless RCH was deployed across seven subsea and deepwater wells, covering four casing and liner sizes and four different liner-hanger systems. A single cement-head configuration with three launch chambers was used throughout the campaign, demonstrating the system’s ability to support different well and equipment configurations without requiring contractor-specific cement-head tooling.
KEY RESULTS
60-Minute Rig-Time Reduction
The discrete, non-job-dependent portion of the cementing sequence was reduced from 95 minutes with a conventional cement head to 35 minutes using the wireless RCH.
Elimination of Man-Riding
Wireless actuation eliminated man-riding for valve operation and dart and ball launching, moving previously elevated-position activities to remote, ground-level operation.
99.98% Global Success Rate
The system has recorded 4,817 global runs since 2010 with 31 recorded failures, representing a 99.98% success rate. The paper also reports 100% success in four of the five complete years from 2020–2024.
COMPATIBILITY ACROSS WELL CONFIGURATIONS
The study evaluated a single wireless RCH configuration across multiple casing and liner sizes and four different liner-hanger systems. The system's three-chamber launch design accommodated the darts, setting balls, and foam wiper balls required for the campaign while supporting standardized operating procedures across the different configurations.
WIRELESS CONTROL AND REMOTE OPERATION
The wireless control package uses frequency-hopping spread-spectrum (FHSS) radio technology and operates through a Class I, Division I-certified belly-pack remote. The system provides sequential remote actuation of the kelly valve, plug valve, upper and lower TIW valves, and dart/ball launch chambers, while retaining manual override capability.
